ILÓ. Love in La Mina
I entered a photography competition and didn’t win.
The assigned theme was love, and I decided to look for it in La Mina, the Sant Adrià de Besòs neighbourhood that, despite being right next to Barcelona, is separated from it by an invisible border. A stigmatised neighbourhood that can be difficult to access for those who don’t live there.
They opened the doors of their homes to me, and I tried to convey what I was looking for: the love between its residents.
Iló. A Roma Heart in La Mina, the title, is thanks to Rafael Perona, president of the Centre Cultural de La Mina and a tireless advocate for his neighbourhood and Roma culture. Iló means “heart” in Caló, the linguistic variety historically associated with Spain’s Roma community.
I came away with the physical mock-up of a book, 80 GB of extra data on my computer, 3,697 shots, and a fascination with a complex neighbourhood that is fighting to break down borders. And, above all, with gratitude to all the people who took part.
